Avant-Garde Designer Fashion with a Sustainable Vision: Bamboo as an Expressive Textile

What is avant-garde fashion and how does sustainability fit in?

The power of slow fashion in the high-end segment

As fast fashion slowly loses its grip, bamboo offers an alternative that convinces both ecologically and aesthetically. Not as a trend, but as a conscious choice. In my clothing line This Is No Disco avant-garde sustainable designer fashion, I use bamboo not only for its sustainability, but because it is a sensual and expressive textile—ideal for silhouettes that speak without shouting. Belgian designer fashion, sustainable and timeless.

Why choose clothing from a Belgian designer, designed in Brussels and ethically crafted in Portugal?

From that vision, I create wearable art. Sustainable Belgian Designer Fashion. Each piece is more than clothing: it is a sculptural extension of your personality. Bamboo amplifies that intention with its fluid drape, natural sheen and exceptional comfort.

How This Is No Disco approaches avant-garde fashion through sustainability

In what follows, I’ll take you into the world of bamboo—from cultivation to finished garment, from its benefits for the planet to those for your body. Because only when material, ethics and form come together, something truly sustainable can emerge.

What makes bamboo stand out — for wearer and planet

Bamboo naturally possesses unique qualities that make it one of the most versatile and eco-friendly materials for fashion. It’s not just a sustainable choice, but it also provides countless benefits for the wearer.

A resource that grows with nature

Bamboo is essentially a form of resilient grass, often considered akin to weeds, thriving in diverse climates worldwide without requiring vast plantations. It grows rapidly and can be harvested every four years without needing to be replanted. This makes it an extremely sustainable resource without the negative effects of large-scale farming, such as soil erosion and water drainage issues.

Moreover, bamboo is one of the best plants for carbon sequestration, capturing 30% more CO2 than other trees. This makes it an excellent choice for those concerned about climate change.

Naturally strong — no chemicals needed

Bamboo naturally has hypoallergenic properties and doesn’t require pesticides to grow. This means no harmful chemicals are needed for its cultivation, making it better for the environment and our health.

A breathable canvas for self-expression

What makes bamboo exceptional is not only its ecological footprint, but also the sensory experience of wearing it. It’s light, breathable, and super soft. Bamboo can absorb 3 to 4 times more moisture than cotton, making it perfect for active days or warmer climates. Its moisture-wicking properties keep you dry and comfortable, even during intense activities or on a hot summer day.

Bamboo fibres draw moisture away from your skin and quickly release it into the air, keeping your clothes fresher for longer without worrying about sweat or unpleasant odours.

Naturally fresh – day after day

Another attractive feature of bamboo is its antibacterial and antifungal properties. These help prevent odours and bacteria from building up in the fabric. You can wear your bamboo garments multiple times without worrying about odour, making them ideal for long workdays or travel.

Practical without compromising on luxury

Bamboo is not just practical. It is also low-maintenance. It’s naturally wrinkle-resistant, so there’s no need for ironing. A gentle tumble dry or laying it flat after washing is enough to restore your bamboo garments to their prime condition. Plus, it lasts up to twice as long as synthetic fabrics, making it a cost-effective choice in the long term.

UV protection and thermoreguletion

Bamboo also provides natural UV protection, making it an excellent choice for summer. In winter, its thermoregulating properties keep you warm, while in summer, it feels cool on the skin. This makes bamboo the perfect material for clothing that can be worn year-round.

Bamboo’s advantages extend beyond the wearer to benefit the planet as well. The bamboo used in the This Is No Disco clothing line is grown in China, where our partner is certified for sustainable farming practices. They use a closed-loop system, where the water used in bamboo processing is purified and reused. The bamboo is turned into viscose using the same closed-loop system, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

Understanding the reasons behind this production process is crucial. The cultivation and production of viscose largely take place in Asia due to the lack of local facilities in Europe. Although my supplier, Bamboo Belgium, is experimenting with local bamboo cultivation, the production of viscose closer to home remains a challenge. Transporting bamboo to China for processing and then shipping the final product back to Portugal for further production would be inefficient and impractical.
In Portugal, the threads are spun and crafted into garments in small, ethical workshops where workers are treated fairly and paid decent wages. Under the oversight of Bamboo Belgium, environmental damage is kept to a minimum, contributing to a more sustainable fashion industry.

Thanks to this collaboration with Bamboo Belgium, This Is No Disco is able not only to give shape to artistic freedom, but also to contribute to a textile future where people and nature take centre stage.

Wearable art: sculptural silhouettes that speak without shouting

At This Is No Disco, bamboo takes centre stage as a textile that is both sustainable and expressive. Not a trend, but a conscious choice for timeless silhouettes that are as comfortable as they are bold. Each piece in the collection is designed as wearable art — a composition of sculptural lines, artistic details and the luxurious sensation of bamboo on your skin.
Bamboo is the ideal canvas for those who refuse to compromise between artistry, ethics and comfort.

Discover how avant-garde and sustainability meet in a collection that doesn’t tell you who to be, but invites you to show who you are.

This Is No Disco. Wear what you think. Feel what you wear.
